About Dionysus

Dennis Gizas first introduced the Dionysus Kalamata Foods to the World in 2002.

Born and raised in Newtown – in Sydney’s inner west – Dennis grew up listening to his father’s stories of growing kalamata olives in Messenia on Greece’s Peloponnese. As he grew older – the history and old family stories began to fascinate him and in 1998 he travelled back to Greece with his father to learn more about his exotic ancestral past.

While Dennis is proud to call himself an Australian – discovering the beauty and history of the family’s farm with its old growth kalamata olive trees some aged 1300 year old trees, had a huge impact on him.

He stayed for a while learning the ancient skill and practices of tendering, growing, harvesting and producing olives and olive oil many connoisseurs recognise as being one of the top five in the world.

On his trip back to Australia, Dennis had a little excess baggage – 3 cases of the family’s Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The reaction was amazing – family, friends even his favourite restaurant demanded more. 10 years later and Dionysus is now one our fastest growing fully imported olive oil brands.

Village Antheia overlooking Pamisios River ValleyIt became obvious that there was a niche in the Australian market for a high quality Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil and in 2009 Dennis began trading under his brand Dionysus Australia. Most of Greece’s production of olive oil is consumed locally and exported to other discernable European markets, little of the high end Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil reaches Australia. Dionysus Australia aims to fill this niche in the Australian olive oil market with a distinctive high quality Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil for an increasingly discerning Australian palate.

What makes our product different from other olive oils imported or produced in Australia is that we only use the kalamata olive variety which has a distinct flavour and consistency. We import directly from Greece and bottle in Australia premium kalamata extra virgin olive oil which is produced from our own and selected olive groves from lower mountain slopes in Messinia and Lakonia Provinces.

Only the finest pressed olives are chosen for importation. Our carefully harvested and selected olives for pressing produce a premium and distinctive olive oil to European Union standard for Extra Virgin Olive Oil requiring a free acidity of less than 0.8%. Our product has a free acidity of 0.33%.

Additionally, what we bottle is directly from the oil press, there is no filtering, no refinement, no preservatives, no additives, no dilution with other oils AND certainly no infusion with flavourings. What you taste is the natural flavour of our kalamata olives.

Dionysus Australia caters for consumers with a discerning palate, producing the highest quality Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the same that has been enjoyed for thousands of years from Messinia in the Peloponnese, Greece.
